When you grade a pattern, you are creating the same style in another size - EVERY measurement point is changed, following a strict formula, to maintain the same fit and proportion in each new size.
When you alter a pattern, you change only some parts of the example, if your bust is a size 8, your waist is. Master the basics as you grade down a multi-size bodice pattern, including the armscye, neckline and darts.
Then, grade up a multi-size pants pattern with tips for grading the crotch point, adjusting darts and working with pockets and waistbands. Take your skills further as you grade down a single-size, sleeveless top pattern. This well-illustrated, step-by-step introduction to grading combines the theory of pattern grading with its practical applications.

I also like all of the English books by Cooklin such as Pattern Grading for Men’s Clothes and Master Patterns and Grading for Women’s Outsizes but I see those books are quite rare now.
Oh my, maybe Linda at International Fashion Publications in Los Angeles () has them. The best pattern grading book published in the United States is Professional Pattern Grading for Women’s, Men’s, and Children’s Apparel by Jack Handford. Unfortunately, because it’s not as well known as the textbooks used in schools, it is out of print -for now.
It is difficult to locate used copies. I guarantee all the pattern grading services keep it on hand. The way the grading charts and mapping is set up in the book most closely mirrors the way we work in the industry.
The charts in competing books (Price/Zamkoff) are so complex but Handford's book nails it. Unlike many book authors, Handford was a pattern maker for years/5(10).
